‘Piranha 3DD’ debuted in eighth place at the UK Box Office, pulling in £242k. Here’s the Top 10 list:

The Avengers £4,169,087

American Pie: Reunion £2,546,626

Dark Shadows £2,404,029

The Lucky One £431,576

Beauty and the Beast 3D £422,924

Safe £298,201

Salmon Fishing in the Yemen £259,550

Piranha 3DD £242,889

How I Spent My Summer Vacation £152,728

The Hunger Games £143,542

Those are bad numbers compared to the £1.33m debut of ‘Piranha 3D’ in August 2010. But even if we don’t compare both films, ‘Piranha 3DD’ still didn’t have a good outcome. Although it was in fact the second best opening of the weekend, only being topped by ‘Dark Shadows’.

A few more reviews have surfaced for Danielle’s latest chiller ‘Piranha 3DD’, which started in UK cinemas today. Sadly, it isn’t getting the same awesome critics the 2010 film got. Still, I’m sure it will be an enjoyable flick for any Danielle Panabaker fan, let’s not forget she’s the lead of the film, and so far critics have not attacked her performance in any way.

Maddy (Panabaker) is at war with her stepfather Chet (Koechner). Together they own a water park, and Chet has fired all the lifeguards, replaced them with strippers, and invented the world’s first strip club swimming park… It’s utterly ridiculous stuff that channels directly into the spirit of Roger Corman’s original.

Aesthetically, things remain pretty much the same as the original, with splatter effects and jiggling breasts very much the major focus. Something, however, clearly hasn’t translated. This one feels tamer and less sure of itself. Yes, the boobs bounce right on cue and half-chewed faces are given extreme close-ups, yet not even a smirk is raised.

Contrary to what we might sometimes feel, you can’t just throw a few tit shots and a bit of gore onto any old piece of shit and wind up with a great B-movie. We have to earn those money shots. Look at Piranha 3D; we’re given time to get to know Jerry O’Connell, Kelly Brook and Riley Steele, every successive scene making us that bit more anxious to see the girls getting naked and Jerry suffering a hideous death; subsequently, it’s a reward when those sights are delivered. Here, with Danielle Panabaker, Katrina Bowden, Meagan Tandy; yes, they’re all lovely to look at, but it’s evident early on that none of them will actually be disrobing, and in a film of this nature that is simply breaking the rules. Throwing in a few anonymous naked extras now and then, no matter how visually striking they may be, simply won’t make up the difference.

The very first review of the film is in! With a 3/5 rating, here’s what WhatCulture.com had to say:

“Piranha 3D” was a film that, for all intents and purposes, probably should not have succeeded, yet it ably demonstrated that if a director fully commits themselves to an idea, no matter how unappealing, the results can impress. Indeed, Alexandre Aja’s remake of Joe Dante’s 1978 B-movie classic gleefully revelled in its boobs-and-blood modus, while delivering action both tense and smart, and, well, featuring Kelly Brook wearing absolutely nothing for most of her screen time. It follows that this sequel – directed by the relatively unknown John Gulager – lacks the bawdy confidence of its predecessor, but still manages to deliver the gory goods and cavorting, naked bodies that its target audience desires.

Piranha 3DD follows the schematic of the previous film to a T, a lazy move perhaps, albeit one which still works, if with lessening effect. Again, one of the opening scenes has a former, now obscure film star – this time Gary Busey in place of Richard Dreyfuss – bite the bullet at the teeth of a swarm of piranhas, before we’re introduced to the attractive teen lead, Maddy (Danielle Panabaker) and all Hell starts to break loose.

It might be thought impossible, but this sequel is in fact even keener to layer on the smut and sleaze than the previous film; within minutes, the screen is festooned with bouncing 3D breasts, as Maddy’s lecherous step-father Chet (David Koechner) has turned their family water park business into a glorified slip-and-slide peep show, complete with “water-certified strippers”. Though none of the nudity is rendered with the oddly thoughtful artistry of the first film – after all, who can forget Kelly Brook’s beautiful naked dip through the water with a feisty friend? – it is still delivered with amusement as well as titillation in mind. While the last film dared to build slowly, not delivering much in the way of gore in its first half, before unleashing a full-tilt Grand Guignol in its second, Piranha 3DD instead unfolds as a more conventional slasher-type film, with piranhas attacking poor, dumb teenagers with increasing aggression throughout. This of course builds to a grand set-piece at the water park, though disappointingly, the stinger at the end of the last film – which saw Adam Scott be devoured by a gigantic “mother” piranha – appears to have been forgotten entirely.Like its predecessor, the wealth of truly entertaining content comes in the second half, where a litany of cameos provides plenty of amusement. Christopher Lloyd returns as the loony Dr Goodman, chewing through the dialogue with a welcome, knowing enthusiasm, and whoever convinced him to utter the phrase “laughing diarrhoea baby” not only once, but twice, should probably get some sort of bonus. David Hasselhoff is also an inspired choice as the water park’s celebrity “lifeguard” despite, as he asserts, having never been a lifeguard in real life. ScribesPatrick Melton and Marcus Dunston – who also wrote most of the lesser “Saw” films – milk his appearance for all it is worth, wringing out one particularly hilarious Baywatch gag which admits The Hoff’s advanced age while still giving him his due as an entertainer. Also returning is Ving Rhames as Deputy Fallon, now kitted out with titanium legs which the piranhas cannot bite through, and to boot, the legs also have shotguns attached to them. Though more could probably have been done with him overall, Rhames gets a good share of the film’s laughs, and steals a few scenes with some outrageous one-liners.Those expecting a gorefest on the level of the previous film might be disappointed by the final showdown at the water park; it is interested in smaller moments between its characters rather than conveying the bloody scale of the carnage like the 2010 film. That said, it somewhat compensates for this with a greater focus on absurd comedy, namely some rib-tickling references to the likes of “Jaws” and “A Nightmare on Elm Street”. Like before, there is a stinger left for the very end, an absurd twist which makes the last film’s cliffhanger seem positively grounded. Needless to say, if a third film is made, it is going to be very interesting. And make sure you stick around for another appearance from Hasselhoff during the credits.Though not as inventively gory as the previous “Piranha”, the riotously funny cameos make it worth another go.

We are less than a month away from the US release of ‘Piranha 3DD’ (not to mention it will open in UK theaters THIS FRIDAY!) and it’s only natural that interviews start popping up everywhere. FearsMag.com also talked to director John Gulager about the film. Here’s what he had to say:

FEARS: Part of the plot for PIRANHA 3DD is that the owner of the water park has replaced the lifeguards with strippers. So I have to ask, what was the casting process like?

John Gulager: I think you just set it! (Laughs) Well, you know… it was an interesting casting process. I was led to a small, weird, little room. Then rose of women would come in and take their clothes off, and this was at the water park where we were shooting. The weird thing was that the name of the little room was the Rumpus Room. It was called that because man who would donated the money for the room was named rumpus. At this room was for the kids, the little children to play in while their parents were in the water park. The room was filled with little children’s toys and little children’s pictures and so on the walls. (Laughing) it was very wrong. I brought one of the producers, JoelSoisson, into the room with me. I didn’t feel totally comfortable being the only guy in the room, though there were casting women and stuff with me. Joel just turned completely red and he never went back with me. But in all honesty that was just a bit of the casting process. It was very interesting all at the same time it was very strange.

FEARS: In all fairness, I should point out that PIRANHA 3DD has a great cast. Just to drop a few names you have Christopher Lloyd, Ving Rhames…

John Gulager: I should point out that we didn’t cast Christopher Lloyd that way, you got to keep his close on doing the casting session. (Laughs)

FEARS: So PIRANHA 3DD sounds like it was a lot of fun. It also reunites the dream team from the last season of Project Greenlight, Marcus Dunstan, Patrick Melton, and yourself. How did all you guys become involved in this sequel?

John Gulager: I just don’t know because we just seem to keep getting involved in stuff. It all starts with the call (whispers) from Bob! It goes something like, “Gulager, Piranha sequel, you want to do it?” Kind of like that. Then Marcus, Patrick, and myself it together in a room and start talking about it. We kind of all got our start professionally on Project Greenlight. I think sometimes people have the thought that we should get those guys together again. That was the thinking here I guess. But with friends… Marcus, Patrick, and I are friends and all that kind of stuff. That kind helps the whole situation too. I don’t have to fight with them.

FEARS: This is a sequel, as such were there any limitations or restrictions put on you guys, or was it more like here’s 10% that you have to work into the sequel and the rest of it you guys can just go nuts?

John Gulager: That was kind of it. Obviously there was this idea that the piranhas would get into the pipes, and I can thing. Now you can take that as you pipes or biological pipes. I think that was the basis for it. Then we went off and got crazy by doing riffs on things like “Jaws 3-D,” and stuff going back a few years. We also had this idea that we would try to do this 80s love triangle story with kids and teenagers, and stick piranhas in there. We were coming from a few different directions but basically that was the idea in the beginning.

FEARS: Given the blend of horror, exploitations and slapstick you guys did in the “Feast” franchise, were there any expectations of you guys pushing the limits in this sequel?

John Gulager: Hum, pushing the limits?

FEARS: Come on, in the “Feast” films we have a monster having intercourse with a cat, a predigested grandmother in a bag shot on a catapult, so with a title like PIRANHA3DD you guys had to go crazy?

John Gulager: (Laughs) Well… I don’t want to give everything away! Okay, first let me say that there is a plot. In that plot there is a story about a young couple and it involves the loss of virginity. They’ve seen a lot of young people’s movies. So this is one of our main plot lines and, I think, one of those funds scenes. It kind of doesn’t work out the way they wished it would. You know, young love blooming and that sort of thing. So maybe there’s this uninvited visitor to their lovemaking. It’s that kind of thing. Suffice to say, there is a fish in every orifice. Oh, ouch, I didn’t say that. (Laughs) It’s not very tasteful but a kind of walks that line. I guess people see things different ways, but when I think about “Piranha,” even when I think about “Feast,” as crazy as things get there is still this line that may be the film walks that kind of has these little sad moments, or thoughtful moments if possible (laughs) in the middle of all the craziness. It may be fake sadness or thoughtfulness, but it still movie-ish. I like that kind of thing.

FEARS: Given the budgets on the “Feast” films I know your kind of limited in what you could do. It seems like you have a little more money to play with on PIRANHA 3DD. Were there any effects or gags that you wanted to do on your previous films that here, or CGI work?

John Gulager: We actually did a lot of practical effects, non-CGI stuff. We have CGI work in the film. Whenever you have large groups of fish that has to be CGI. At the same time, we did a lot of practical effects. Gary Tunnicliffe, special effects guy, would put on his scuba suit with a little mechanical piranha and get in the water. So there’s a lot of that kind of stuff. We have a lot more of that kind of stuff which is different from the first film. I don’t know if that’s good or bad, but that’s the way we approached it. In the end, looks pretty cool. Damn talking fish… No, there’s no talking fish in the movie. They growl maybe a little bit.

Shooting it in 3-D is completely different from my first film and what I’ve done before. There is a little bit of a learning curve. It took us a little bit longer to do things, and there were some restrictions on the way things were shot. If I was going to do another film now in 3-D I think it would be much easier. It basically comes into play because you have to deal with is very large camera. It’s kind of cumbersome, but in a way it lends itself to a more classical approach. We always tried to keep the camera moving because I like that kind of feel. It also helps with the 3-D. So as a tad limiting because I couldn’t run off with a little camera and shoot some stuff here and do some pickups over there. We had this big camera that we had to move around and it was kind of cool.

FEARS: I’m a tad curious, the film is set in a self-contained location, a water park. Add in the 3-D and the water, was it any easier or harder than your previous films?

John Gulager: There is a water park, but there’ll also lakes and some road stuff. It was kind of neat being self-contained, but we were running up against the fact that the water park was going to open at a certain point. So we couldn’t keep shooting past a certain day. Also we encountered this whole situation with the blood. In this type of movie you can imagine that there’s lots of blood. If you’re in a water park there’s nowhere for that blood to go. At first, we didn’t know what we were going to do. Some folks were suggesting that we add the blood digitally, to me that was craziness. Luckily, this guy Matt Kutcher had developed this blood for another movie, “Shark Night,” and what happens is that the chlorine in the water makes it go away overnight. It takes a little while but it goes away. Someone had suggested we drain the pools but it takes five days to completely drain the water park and fill it back up again. That wasn’t an option. So luckily we got this blood. It looks great and it kind of fades away after a while. My heart was skipping a beat for a while there because we were up against it with his blood thing.

FEARS: You must be extremely busy putting final touches on the film, regardless do you have another project waiting in the wings or are things pretty amorphous at this point?

John Gulager: Okay, the movies done. It’s ready to go. As far as myself, I don’t really have anything lined up. I keep thinking about making, don’t laugh, a Western. However, it hasn’t happened yet. I love always Japanese, Chinese, and Korean period piece films. The closest thing we have is the Western. And I think that would be fun to make. That’s about it for the moment.

Upcoming-Movies talked to John Gulager, director of Danielle’s latest flick, ‘Piranha 3DD’. Here’s what he had to say:

Upcoming-Movies.com: So, how does one book a gig, directing the sequel to “Piranha 3D?”

John Gulagar: I think it came off of the “Feast” movies. In my world, they called everyone else and they turned it down, but no, I got a phone call, from Bob Weinstein. ‘Piranha? You want to do it?’ And I was like, ‘okay, sure.’ I liked the first one, the one that came out a couple of years ago. I had no idea I was going to do the sequel. I saw it at Chinese and watched it, and ironically, that’s where we’re going to play. It was kind of weird that I ended up doing the sequel.

What I liked about the first one is that it’s totally unapologetic, and it knows exactly how kind of a movie it is.

John Gulagar: Also, that one girl, the French girl, was such a good actress. And she got naked. It was so great. But they killed her.

Do you feel like it’s in the same spirit or vein?

John Gulagar: Yeah, I’d say so. I mean, you could look at that one and go, ‘well, it’s ludicrous, the piranha coming up from the earthquake, blah blah blah.’ We actually had piranhas in the drainpipe, so possibly you could even say that ours is a little more kooky. But then again, we take the kookiness and we try to play it straight, which is, in my mind, what they did. I don’t want to think about how awful it could be. You take a kooky premise, and, like a comedian does a crazy thing with a straight face, that to me becomes funny and watchable.

So, when you get brought on to a project like this, the sequel to what was a seriously profitable venture, how much latitude do you have to make it your own?

John Gulagar: I’ll just say, straight out, this is obviously the biggest film I’ve ever worked on. In that, the studio becomes more involved. That’s just the way it is. I think maybe when you become Quentin or one of these other guys, it’s not like that. But for me, doing “Piranha,” it’s on the radar.

Well, it’s a huge opportunity for you, too.

John Gulagar: Sure, it’s a big opportunity, but everything like this is an opportunity for the studio and the actors. Everybody has a stake in it. This is something people are going to see, at the theater, on TV, on DVD. It’s going to be here.

Now, we know it’s a big summer, bloody movie, and it’s a great big joke, and I mean that in a positive way.

John Gulagar: It’s a film joke. I like movies with film jokes and stuff like that, which are referential. We do a fair amount of homage-y type stuff. The first movie was, I think, more 70s. Ours is more 80s, kinda maybe, if that’s possible, even though we didn’t try to make it different, necessarily. I think that’s the way it came out, with the story and everything. We had this idea of a love triangle, and all these things that were prevalent in that time period. We also hearken back to “Jaws 3D” a lot, at least in our minds. It may not seem that way, but with the water park and everything. They had the giant Shamu water park, we have a mom and pop water park. But in our minds, that’s a joke. I don’t know if anyone else will get that.

Well, the audience is in on the joke the whole time. And despite making a really fun movie, you’re working with water and water slides. I’ve got to think that’s much more challenging than the audience gives you credit for.

John Gulagar: Not only that, the thing that surprised me the most, when we got there, was that I thought that you’d get the blood in the water and then drain the pool so you could fill it up and keep shooting. Apparently, it takes five days to fill this back up again. So that’s a problem. First, we hear, don’t worry, we’ll do it digitally. And as filmmakers, we hear that a lot. Luckily, we got some blood from another movie that was made to dissolve after a period of time in the chlorine. That was something we were always up against. Also, the deal with this water park, that we shot in, they actually drilled down into an underground lake. This is actually part of our storyline, but the city sued them, but the water park won. But because of that, the city is really vigilant about testing their water. So there we are, tossing tons and tons of blood into the water, which made everybody pull their hair out. It all worked out in the end, but it’s one of those situations you face where it’s the last thing you’re thinking about. In the first Piranha, they had hoses of blood. They turned the whole Lake Havisu into this red-brown mess.

The last movie was known for having the greatest volume of blood of all time. How do you top that? Can you top that?

John Gulagar: Well, because of our situation, we don’t have the greatest volume of blood in a movie of all time. But it becomes more beautiful, in a way, because you’re dealing with blues and reds all mixing together, with people getting killed. The other thing is that in the pool, when the blood is in there, it kinda just turns brown. It doesn’t look very good. There were some pools which we could keep putting blood into, but they just turn brown after a while. It’s not cool at all. It’s just kind of icky. So we were faced with that, so we have part blood, part blue water. This is probably the most colorful movie I’ll ever work on. We wanted that poppy kind of look next to the blood.

In the “Feast” movies, you worked with a lot of established names. But here you’ve got David Hasselhoff and Gary Busey, which is pretty far out there. What’s it like for you to come in and work with these guys who known to be extraordinarily strong personalities.

John Gulagar: Gary started the whole shoot. He was the second day, out in the middle of the lake, the freezing cold lake. That was pretty interesting. They bring their game onto the set, but in different ways. Christopher Lloyd? The most quiet guy ever. You just don’t expect that. And then Gary, very big, very intense, the whole thing. But Hasselhoff was interesting, because a lot of the other people were blocked off from the crowds. Not him. We shot part of it in a hotel, and there were people lined up across the street. I’ve never been involved with that kind of thing. They were calling his name, wanting to take pictures. And he would come out on the balcony and wave to everyone. That was really interesting for me. It was very Hollywood-ish, in a way. But everyone’s really nice, everyone who comes on. People in show business are pretty nice.

Now this was your first 3D movie?

John Gulagar: Yes, it is.

Did you shoot it that way, or was it a conversion, like the first one?

John Gulagar: We shot this one in 3D. But I’m not totally against conversions, I have to say. This was real 3D. The whole 3D rig is huge. It was a little bit like going back and shooting with the giant Mitchell cameras or something. Everything is on a crane or some sort of pedestal, or a dolly. They’re just so heavy. Then we dealt with water and underwater stuff. We had a slightly lighter camera system for underwater, but still, it’s pretty hairy. But I think on the next one, it would go a lot smoother.

So, for you, as a first-timer working with 3D, how does that change the way you envision what you’re shooting?

John Gulagar: Well, obviously, the type of movie that we’re doing, you know, “Piranha 3DD,” isn’t necessarily subtle. In my mind, if we totally try to make it completely tasteful, we wouldn’t be doing our jobs. So we do have things poking out into the audience, and things flying by, but there’s also a certain beauty to the 3D, actually. I was watching it the other day in a little screening room, and it looks like you’re looking in a window into this other room or world. I have to say, it’s pretty cool looking. At the same time, as a moviemaker, there are certain things that you’re always going to do the same way. You’re not going to throw the baby out with the bathwater. There are certain fundamentals, or at least things that I like, like the camera on the floor or something. You have to find ways to do that. We have a shot where some feet are walking along the ground, and they have to walk past something that’s laying on the ground there, but they couldn’t get the camera down low enough. So first they put it on a furry pad and dragged it. So you have this high-tech camera system, but it’s on this blanket, just dragging it across the floor. And it worked out really well. Blanket cam.
