Academy Award winner Kevin Costner stars as Earl Brooks, a man who has managed to keep his two incompatible worlds from intersecting by controlling his cunning alter ego (Academy Award winner William Hurt). Neither his wife (Marg Helgenberger) or daughter (Danielle Panabaker) could conceive of the truth. But as Mr. Brooks succumbs to one more murderous urge, an amateur photographer (Dane Cook) witnesses the crime. Suddenly Brooks finds himself trapped in the twisted agenda of an opportunistic bystander, as well as hunted by an unorthodox and tenacious investigator, Tracy Atwood (Demi Moore). Now, a terrifying game is unfolding where desire is dark, knowledge is deadly and the man who has everything has everything to hide.

• Trivia | Fun Facts
- Danielle Panabaker plays the daughter of Mr. Brooks (Kevin Costner) and Mrs. Brooks (Marg Helgenberger). Panabaker's younger sister, Kay Panabaker plays the recurring role of Lindsey Willows, the daughter of Catherine Willows (also played by Marg Helgenberger) on "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" (2000) for CBS.

- According to interviews with Kevin Costner, this is supposedly the first movie in a trilogy.

- The prayer Mr. Brooks repeats throughout the movie is called "Serenity Prayer" written by the theologian Reinhold Niebuhr. This prayer is in use in Alcoholics Anonymous since the early 1940s. Mr. Brooks visits AA-meetings to curb his morbid addiction.
• Goofs | Bloopers
- Crew or equipment visible: When Mr. Brooks is talking to Jane in his office, you can see the camera man's arm in the window reflection behind Mr. Brooks' desk.

- Incorrectly regarded as goofs: The movie is supposed to be set in Oregon, however the license plates on the cars let you know that it can't possibly be Oregon. Oregon license plates have three letters and then three numbers or vice versa. Not two letters and then a number with two numbers and a letter for the second half of the plate. This, however, is a common device in filmmaking, as film producers do not wish to actual registrations. Films shot in New York and Washington almost always feature cars whose license plates fail to conform to registration patterns.

- Continuity: When Earl drives the jeep to Jane's school, you can see the Axe in the car and near it you can see the gear handle is set on PARKING. As the camera goes up, you can clearly see the car is moving and Earl is driving it.

- Revealing mistakes: Mr. Brooks' glasses are made of glass and aren't prescription lenses. You can see this in two scenes in particular: the scene in the beginning where Mr. Brooks and his wife go out for ice cream and the scene where Mr. Brooks is burning the pictures. Also, it is unlikely that this could have been intended by the filmmakers because Mr. Brooks' daughter puts them at least once when she is in his office.
• Production Notes

"I think all the different characters, and specifically the actors who created them, they’re all so compelling that it’s just so interesting to watch the whole thing. Everyone is extraordinarily talented and has such great, interesting characters."
- Danielle Panabaker

"He’s fantastic. There’s a certain intensity to Kevin and the way he works. You can see him thinking on camera and that’s why he’s such a wonderful movie star. You see all these thoughts going through his head and that’s why he’s so great."
- Danielle Panabaker

"Kevin was wonderful to work with. He takes his craft so seriously and just does such an incredible job making movies. Rehearsals are so important and it’s really great to work with him."
- Danielle Panabaker

"We actually shot the movie in Shreveport and I was out there almost two weeks before we started shooting and spent every day at the house they rented for him, just rehearsing, but also getting to know him. He hung out. His house was right on the lake so we’d take the boat out for a spin. He has a dog; he has a Golden Lab named Wyatt and I love Wyatt because he’s awesome. (Laughing) I bonded with his dog as well."
